Im interested in purchasing a 40 watt CCL and trying to find our real world capabilities. Can it etch gass or mirrors?

I've had success etching plate glass (like in photo frames) and jars/bottles with a 40w laser. I personally haven't tried mirror yet, so hopefully others will chime in. I found results varied depending on the type of glass, but overall results were good. Once you have a machine, the best bet is to test it on the same glass you wish to engrave on. The best speed and power settings vary from machine to machine. To get the best results on cylindrical shaped objects like glasses or wine bottles, a rotatory device is used to ensure the distance from the laser head remains consistent. There is even some DIY rotary device information out there.

A friend at work that has the K40 machine, was able to do a mirror, but he etched it from the back side so that the pattern was removed and the blank area still had the mirror coating left.
